Findlay, Ohio Substance Abuse Trends

Findlay is a city located in northwest Ohio and is part of Hancock County. It is the second-largest city in this area with a 2017 population of just under 42,000. Findlay is broken up into two zip codes, 45839 and 45840. Situated about 40 miles south of Toledo, Findlay has seen a widespread increase in substance abuse and fatal overdose deaths. The population in this city has only slightly increased since 1990, but the number of drug-related deaths and rehab admissions in Findlay, OH have risen substantially.

The opioid epidemic that is occurring in the United States has affected Ohio more than almost any other state in the country. Overdose deaths related to heroin and synthetic opioids like fentanyl have skyrocketed throughout the Buckeye state over the past ten years. Large cities and small towns have all been impacted by these dangerous drugs. Findlay, OH is no exception.

Opiate Overdose Statistics

In 2016, 4,050 people were killed by a fatal overdose throughout OH, the second-highest rate in the United States. 3,613 of the lives lost were directly related to an opiate overdose. This was a massive increase from the year prior, and since then the number of overdose deaths continues to rise. In 2015, there were 3,050 overdose deaths. In 2014, there were 2,531 deaths from overdose. The Disease Control Center (CDC) listed Ohio as one of the top opiate hotspots in the country. The number of people who passed away due to an opiate overdose in Hancock county doubled from 2016 to 2017.

In October of 2018, two individuals were arrested in Hancock county with more than $70,000 worth of heroin in their vehicle. Investigators working on another case of burglary and drug trafficking found nearly 400 packaged units of fentanyl in an open wooded area. This is more than 3,600 doses, said a detective of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Narcotics Division. This amount of fentanyl could easily cause hundreds of fatal overdoses, especially when it is combined with drugs such as meth and cocaine. These dangerous drugs are in our backyard and are the number one drug threat to our community and our children.

Detox Centers in Findlay Ohio

Anyone in Hancock county who is struggling with substance abuse issues should seek professional help from a detox or rehab center in Findlay, OH. These treatment programs help those hooked on drugs or alcohol safely and comfortably overcome withdrawal symptoms. Without the help of a rehab in Findlay, one will face a variety of intense physical and mental stressors. These withdrawals are far from easy to overcome without the help of a detox program and can easily cause someone struggling to turn back to heroin or other opiates for relief.

There are only a few rehabs in Hancock County and surrounding areas, so it isn’t uncommon for people to travel throughout Ohio to find the help they need and deserve. The most effective and most common plan to overcome addiction issues in Ohio includes a few steps. The first step would be admitting that there is a problem and become willing to get help for it. At this point it is time to enter a detox program in or around Findlay, OH.

The time in a detox center will vary from person to person, the average stay is 5-8 days. Detox is essential. It allows the person’s body to rid itself of the harmful substances and overcome withdrawals. Most detoxes in Ohio will administer medications to help offset the physical pain associated with most narcotic drugs. This is also a time where the user will be able to clear their mind and handle cravings while in a safe environment.

Findlay OH Rehab and Treatment Options

Once detox has been completed the best option is to enter an inpatient rehab center near Findlay, OH. For 28+ days the individual will have access to support groups, therapy sessions, and relapse prevention courses; all while in a safe environment. Some Ohio treatment centers offer a dual diagnosis level of care. This means that any underlying mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, will be addressed.

Over 70% of Findlay, OH residents who struggle with substance abuse disorder also struggle with underlying mental health issues. If these problems remain unaddressed it will increase the chance of that person relapsing.

Some people who struggle with substance abuse disorder are unable to enter an inpatient rehab center. They have a job that they cannot stay away from or some other obligation that is not dismissable for multiple weeks. Of course, entering a 28-day program is ideal, but if it is not possible one should find an outpatient program in Ohio.

Outpatient programs typically meet 2-4 days a week for a few hours a day. Clients will have access to group and individual therapy sessions and will have to take mandatory drug tests. This helps keep those struggling accountable and continuously working on their recovery.
