What is PHP like at Ohio Addiction Recovery Center?
The partial hospitalization program at OARC is very similar to our residential rehab program. The primary difference is where the client resides. Clients in residential treatment stay onsite and have a bed at our facility. Clients in our PHP program choose their own accommodations but most choose to stay in a sober living home.
During PHP treatment, clients engage in a variety of therapeutic modalities, such as individual therapy, group therapy, holistic therapies, life skills classes, and 12-step programming. Our PHP program is based on evidence-based treatment models and treatment plans are always individualized to meet the needs of each client.
OARC is a dual diagnosis treatment center, meaning that clients are treated both for addiction and any co-occurring conditions. Addiction is often accompanied by co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. For that reason, clients in PHP also receive psychiatric care.
PHP also gives clients an opportunity to start building a peer support network. Peer support is considered a critical aspect of addiction recovery. When you leave OARC or step down to IOP, you’ll have a group of new friends and supporters that are also recovering from substance abuse.

Who is PHP for?
PHP is typically a step down from residential treatment, meaning most of our clients have first completed residential treatment prior to PHP treatment. That said, not all of our clients stepping down from residential rehab enter our PHP treatment.
Each client is different and has unique needs. Treatment history, the frequency and length of substance use, family dynamics, mental health conditions, and treatment progress can all play a role in whether someone is referred to PHP treatment. Some individuals discharge directly to outpatient treatment and others slowly transition to outpatient with partial hospitalization.
PHP is best for those who:
- Completed residential treatment but still have a higher chance of relapsing
- Faced severe episodes of addiction and/or overdose and have difficulty managing cravings
- Are still undergoing withdrawal symptoms and may need further detoxification services

Benefits of our partial hospitalization program in Columbus, OH
There are many benefits to PHP treatment. Early recovery can be a sensitive time with various triggers, mood swings, and temptations. The intensive structure of PHP can soften the shock compared to discharging directly to outpatient treatment. PHP gives clients a slower transition back to everyday life which can increase treatment effectiveness and success rates.
PHP can also be a better alternative for those who may be considering IOP instead of residential. Many individuals prefer to start treatment with an outpatient program. At OARC, we rarely recommend clients to use outpatient as a first line of treatment. PHP offers a far more effective and intensive treatment experience compared to outpatient alone.
It’s always best to have an assessment before choosing a treatment center or program type. You wouldn’t tell a doctor what treatments you need for any other medical condition, so it’s also best to seek counsel for the most appropriate treatment model for addiction as well. PHP may be best for some individuals while residential will be recommended for others.
PHP vs Residential Rehab
If you’re considering residential rehab vs PHP, it’s best to have an assessment by a medical professional or specialist that will recommend the best level of care for your situation.
Residential rehab has far higher success rates because the first 30 days of recovery can be quite difficult for most people. Staying at home or having the freeform of a sober living home in the first 30 days of sobriety can bring triggers, cravings, mood swings, and other unanticipated emotions. In addition to increased success rates, most people find the structure and support of residential rehab to be extremely helpful. Learn more about residential treatment at OARC.
If you have concerns or fears about residential rehab, please understand that this is very normal. Entering an addiction treatment center or even choosing to get sober can be scary and requires courage, but it can be the single best decision of your life. In fact, it very well may save your life!
We encourage anyone to give us a call if they have questions about addiction treatment or would like more information about our program. We can offer no-obligation assessments to help you understand if PHP or residential is the best fit for you.
