Ohio Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

This page was medically reviewed for accuracy by Alexis LeFevre-Casby, NP, an addiction and mental health specialist and family nurse practitioner at Ohio Addiction Recovery Center.

PHP rehab, or a partial hospitalization program, is a level of care that is more intensive than outpatient treatment but less so than full residential treatment. Unlike inpatient treatment, clients do not reside at our facility and instead choose their own housing accommodations.

At Ohio Addiction Recovery Center, we provide a full continuum of care that includes detox, residential, PHP, and outpatient treatment. PHP treatment is often a step down from residential treatment. Learn more about our PHP program in Ohio below. For admissions, call us 24/7 at 800-481-8457

What is PHP like at Ohio Addiction Recovery Center?

The partial hospitalization program at OARC is very similar to our residential rehab program. The primary difference is where the client resides. Clients in residential treatment stay onsite and have a bed at our facility. Clients in our PHP program choose their own accommodations but most choose to stay in a sober living home.

At OARC, we believe in a holistic approach that addresses the core underlying issues of addiction while helping clients prevent relapse through education and ongoing support.

During PHP treatment, clients engage in a variety of therapeutic activities, such as:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Holistic therapies
  • Life skills classes
  • 12-step programming
  • Employment and vocational assistance
  • Housing assistance, such as sober living
  • Random drug & alcohol screenings
  • Case management for assistance with legal, medical, employment, and transportation issues
  • Medication management
  • And more

Our PHP program is based on evidence-based treatment models and treatment plans are always individualized to meet the needs of each client.

Dual Diagnosis PHP in Central Ohio

It’s estimated that about half of individuals who struggle with drug or alcohol abuse have a co-occurring mental health condition. Those with mental health disorders are also about twice as likely to develop a substance use disorder.

For this reason, we believe addiction and mental health should be treated one in the same. Addressing underlying mental health conditions is a critical aspect of addiction recovery.

OARC is a dual diagnosis treatment center, which means clients are treated both for addiction and any co-occurring conditions. Common co-occurring mental health conditions include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Trauma/PTSD
  • OCD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)

For that reason, clients receive psychiatric care along with clinical care for co-occurring mental health conditions while in PHP.

Primary PHP Components at Ohio Addiction Recovery Center include:

Addiction & Behavioral Therapy

In the partial hospitalization program at OARC we utilize evidence-based addiction therapy models such as individual therapy, group therapy, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), trauma informed therapy, humanistic therapy, and more.

Unique Holistic Therapies

We’re proud to offer holistic and spiritual therapies such as life skills therapy, team building & adventure therapy, yoga, personal training, and Sunday religious services for those interested. We believe the most effective addiction treatment models treat the whole person.

Sober Support

Peer support is a critical aspect of PHP. Clients will build supportive relationships with other clients, alumni, AA/NA volunteers, and OARC staff, many of whom are in addiction recovery themselves. When a client graduates PHP, they will have an entire sober network to support them in their next chapter of recovery.

Relapse Prevention

At OARC, we often recommend a long term continuum of care because we believe this provides the most effective model for relapse prevention. With our intensive program, you or a loved one will learn new tools and build habits to achieve successful recovery. You or a loved one will also build a support network and be introduced to 12-step fellowships.

Who is PHP for?

PHP is typically a step down from residential treatment, meaning most of our clients have first completed residential treatment prior to PHP treatment. That said, not all of our clients stepping down from residential rehab enter our PHP treatment.

Each client is different and has unique needs. Treatment history, the frequency and length of substance use, family dynamics, mental health conditions, and treatment progress can all play a role in whether someone is referred to PHP treatment. Some individuals discharge directly to outpatient treatment and others slowly transition to outpatient with partial hospitalization.

PHP is best for those who:

  • Completed residential treatment but still have a higher chance of relapsing
  • Faced severe episodes of addiction and/or overdose and have difficulty managing cravings
  • Are still undergoing withdrawal symptoms and may need further detoxification services

Benefits of our partial hospitalization program in Columbus, OH

There are many benefits to PHP treatment. Early recovery can be a sensitive time with various triggers, mood swings, and temptations. The intensive structure of PHP can soften the shock compared to discharging directly to outpatient treatment. PHP gives clients a slower transition back to everyday life which can increase treatment effectiveness and success rates.

PHP can also be a better alternative for those who may be considering IOP instead of residential. Many individuals prefer to start treatment with an outpatient program. At OARC, we rarely recommend clients to use outpatient as a first line of treatment. PHP offers a far more effective and intensive treatment experience compared to outpatient alone.

It’s always best to have an assessment before choosing a treatment center or program type. You wouldn’t tell a doctor what treatments you need for any other medical condition, so it’s also best to seek counsel for the most appropriate treatment model for addiction as well. PHP may be best for some individuals while residential will be recommended for others.

PHP vs Residential Rehab

If you’re considering residential rehab vs PHP, it’s best to have an assessment by a medical professional or specialist that will recommend the best level of care for your situation.

Residential rehab has far higher success rates because the first 30 days of recovery can be quite difficult for most people. Staying at home or having the freeform of a sober living home in the first 30 days of sobriety can bring triggers, cravings, mood swings, and other unanticipated emotions. In addition to increased success rates, most people find the structure and support of residential rehab to be extremely helpful.

Some benefits of PHP treatment include:

1. Flexibility: PHP offers more flexibility than residential rehab. Patients can attend therapy and treatment during the day and return home in the evenings. This allows them to maintain some level of normalcy in their daily lives.

2. Support: Patients in PHP receive intensive therapy and support, similar to residential rehab, but they can also rely on the support of their families and friends during non-treatment hours.

3. Lower Cost: PHP is often less expensive than residential rehab because patients do not incur costs for room and board.

4. Transition: PHP can be a good step-down option for individuals who have completed a residential rehab program. It provides a structured environment while allowing them to transition back to their regular lives more gradually.

On the other hand, residential rehab benefits include:

1. 24/7 Support: In residential rehab, patients have round-the-clock support and supervision, providing a safe and controlled environment for recovery.

2. Intensive Therapy: Residential rehab programs offer intensive therapy and counseling sessions, often in both individual and group settings. This intensity can be crucial for individuals with severe addiction or mental health issues.

3. Removal from Triggers: Residential rehab removes patients from their usual environment and triggers, providing a break from the situations that may have contributed to their problems.

4. Focus on Recovery: With no distractions from the outside world, residents can fully focus on their recovery without the stressors of daily life.

5. Peer Support: Residential rehab provides opportunities for peer support and bonding, as patients are living together and experiencing similar challenges.

If you have concerns or fears about residential vs PHP rehab, please understand that this is very normal. Entering an addiction treatment center or even choosing to get sober can be scary and requires courage, but it can be the single best decision of your life. In fact, it very well may save your life!

We encourage anyone to give us a call if they have questions about addiction treatment or would like more information about our program. We can offer no-obligation assessments to help you understand if PHP or residential is the best fit for you.

PHP vs IOP

Intensive outpatient is very different from PHP rehab. IOP is considered a step-down from PHP, and clients only attend treatment for 3-hours per day, 3 days per week. IOP allows clients to work or attend school when they aren’t in treatment. At OARC, we consider IOP “after care”, meaning it is intended to support those graduating our residential or PHP programs and generally do not recommend it as the first level of care.

How Much Does PHP Cost in Ohio?

At OARC, PHP is generally covered by health insurance. Clients may be responsible for copays or deductibles, which would be dependent on your plan. We are in-network with all major health insurance providers which often significantly reduces out-of-pocket costs compared to out-of-network care. Our representatives are available 24/7 if you’d like to verify your insurance and any out-of-pocket costs.

Clients without insurance may opt to pay out of pocket for their treatment. Costs can vary depending on the needs of each client, so we encourage you to give us a call for a no-obligation assessment.
