What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program is a structured level of addiction treatment thatβs more intensive than outpatient care but allows clients to live at home or in sober living. Clients attend treatment during the day, participating in therapy, holistic services, and relapse-prevention work, then return to their own housing at night.
PHP at OARC is often a step down from residential treatmentβbut for some, it can also be an entry point into care, depending on individual needs. As part of our full continuum of care (detox, residential, PHP, and outpatient), PHP plays a vital role in helping people transition safely and confidently back into daily life.
What to Expect in Our Ohio PHP
Our Columbus PHP mirrors many components of our residential program, with the main difference being where clients live. Residential clients stay onsite at our treatment center, while PHP clients live in sober living or other approved housing.
During PHP, clients participate in a full schedule of therapeutic and recovery-focused programming, which may include:
- Individual therapy sessions
- Group therapy and process groups
- Holistic and experiential therapies
- Life skills development
- 12-step or alternative peer support
- Employment and vocational assistance
- Housing resources and sober living support
- Random drug and alcohol screenings
- Case management (legal, medical, transportation, employment)
- Medication management when appropriate
Our treatment plans are evidence-based and always tailored to each clientβs clinical, emotional, and practical needs.

Dual Diagnosis PHP in Central Ohio
Itβs estimated that about half of individuals who struggle with drug or alcohol abuse have a co-occurring mental health condition. Those with mental health disorders are also about twice as likely to develop a substance use disorder.
For this reason, we believe addiction and mental health should be treated one in the same. Addressing underlying mental health conditions is a critical aspect of addiction recovery.
OARC is a dual diagnosis treatment center, which means clients are treated both for addiction and any co-occurring conditions. Common co-occurring mental health conditions include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Trauma/PTSD
- OCD
- Bipolar disorder
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
For that reason, clients receive psychiatric care along with clinical care for co-occurring mental health conditions while in PHP.

PHP vs. IOP: Understanding the Next Step
Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is typically a step down from PHP, offering fewer weekly hours (often 3 hours per day, 3 days per week). PHP is a better fit for those needing more structure and clinical support, while IOP serves as ongoing aftercare for many of our graduates.
