Ohio Outpatient Rehab For Substance Use

This page was medically reviewed for accuracy by Alexis LeFevre-Casby, NP, an addiction and mental health specialist and family nurse practitioner at Ohio Addiction Recovery Center.

The outpatient programs at Ohio Addiction Recovery Center are the third phase of our recommended continuum of care. Outpatient rehabilitation is referred to as “aftercare” because it provides continued support for our clients after their initial 30-day treatment.

Unlike a medical detox center or residential rehab, in an outpatient rehabilitation program, clients continue to live at home and can attend work or school. This provides clients with comprehensive support while allowing them to attend to other obligations. There are typically two levels to outpatient care: intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient (OP).

What Does Outpatient Rehab in Columbus, OH Consist Of?

The intensive outpatient program at OARC is at least 6 weeks long and 3 days per week. IOP includes groups, individual sessions, treatment assignments, life skills, relapse prevention, drug testing, peer support, accountability, case management, and more.

OP typically comes after IOP and reduces the cadence of sessions.

If you are considering drug or alcohol treatment, it’s important to be evaluated by a medical professional. Many clients come to us requesting outpatient care as their first treatment option when they truly qualify for inpatient care. Only a medical professional can diagnose the appropriate level of care.

By calling OARC, we provide 20-minute assessments over the phone. These assessments are then passed to our physician and clinical team to recommend a level of care. To start your assessment, you may call (800) 481-8457

Is Outpatient Rehab Right For Me?

As mentioned, outpatient rehabs in Ohio are typically designed as follow-up care for those who completed inpatient treatment. Sometimes inpatient treatment is not an option due to outside responsibilities that cannot be placed on hold, even for a short amount of time.

For those who cannot enter inpatient treatment, an outpatient rehab center will be their next best option. Many outpatient facilities require clients to be completely detoxed prior to letting them enroll in their program.

There are a variety of factors our team uses to determine if an individual is a better fit for inpatient or outpatient care. Such factors include the type of substance or substances being used, the frequency of use, the amount of use, chemical dependency, and co-occurring conditions.

Some individuals believe if they aren’t experiencing withdrawal symptoms then they shouldn’t go to inpatient rehab. This is not always the case. Addiction is a powerful disease and is often accompanied by other conditions, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or poor coping mechanisms. It can be difficult to fully address the underlying causes of addiction in outpatient treatment alone.

Additionally, success rates vastly improve when individuals first complete inpatient addiction treatment.

To know whether inpatient or outpatient rehab is right for you or loved one, you can ask:

  • Do I lack control over my substance use?
  • Do I use more than I intend to?
  • Do I use even when I didn’t plan to?
  • Is my substance use causing problems at my job or with school?
  • Is my substance use causing strain in my relationships?
  • Am I experiencing health problems due to my substance use?
  • Am I becoming more depressed or anxious?
  • Do I experience physical symptoms when I try to limit or quit my use?
  • Do I experience cravings when I’m not using or drinking?
  • Do I spend a lot of time thinking about how or when I can use?
  • Is my substance use causing financial problems?
  • Am I losing interest in personal passions or hobbies?
  • Am I experiencing increased tolerance? (Eg. it takes more alcohol to get drunk than it used to)

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, our addiction treatment program may be a fit for you.

Substance abuse is not a surface-level issue. More often than not, people who have issues with addiction or alcoholism also struggle with underlying mental health problems. If problems with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues remain unresolved the chance of relapse will increase significantly.

At OARC, our clinical staff can help diagnose and treat co-occurring conditions, such as:

  • Unresolved trauma
  • Bipolar disorder (BP)
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
  • Anxiety or panic disorders
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • And more

Why Should I Choose Ohio Addiction Recovery Center for Outpatient Rehab?

At Ohio Addiction Recovery Center, we’re dedicated to providing the most comprehensive addiction treatment in Ohio. We were rated the #1 addiction treatment center in the state of Ohio by Newsweek. Our reviews from our happy clients also speak for themselves.

At OARC, you or your loved one will experience a team of dedicated support from day one through months to even years into recovery. Many of our alumni stay involved and come speak to our clients currently in treatment.

Our treatment model has proven to be successful. We believe our outpatient programs are so successful because our clients begin outpatient care with 30 days of recovery already under their belt, a treatment plan established in residential care, and coping skills already learned to prepare them for “every day life.”

Starting recovery can be scary. Many individuals don’t realize the wave of emotions that can surface in the first few days of recovery. That’s why initial residential care is so critical to prepare our clients for outpatient rehab.

What if I Can Only Do Outpatient Treatment Because of My Job?

This is a common concern we hear from clients. They would prefer inpatient rehab but are looking for outpatient addiction treatment due to their job. If you weren’t aware, there is a law called The Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA, which requires employers to provide unpaid leave for certain medical conditions. This means your job cannot legally fire you for attending addiction treatment.

If you are interested in addiction treatment but aren’t sure outpatient rehab will be successful, we encourage you to reach out. We have a case manager on staff that can assist with employment issues, FMLA, and short-term disability to ensure you do not lose income due to addiction treatment.

What Outpatient Rehab Programs Do You Have in Columbus, Ohio?

Our facility is located just outside Columbus in the suburb, Grove City. At our Grove City location, we offer gender-specific and substance-specific care. Learn more about programs below:

Substance Abuse Therapy

Outpatient treatment programs feature a blend of individual and group therapy that are drawn from a variety of therapy approaches. It is rare that clients have the same story and the same struggles. This is why many rehabs in Ohio, including ours, offer up individualized care plans. This means that each client has a treatment plan built around their specific needs. Individual therapy sessions are specifically tailored to address your own unique and specific issues.

There is also group therapy that takes place in outpatient centers.  This will often feature small groups that are facilitated by an experienced therapist. The focus of these groups can vary from day to day covering everything from relapse prevention to mindfulness training and everything in between.

Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders

While many outpatient rehab centers in Ohio focus on the actual use of drugs and alcohol as the cause for one’s addiction, substance use is often a symptom of a more deeply rooted problem such as depression, anxiety or PTSD. With the appropriate interventions or referrals to reputable mental health services and related agencies, those who get treatment at our Ohio outpatient rehab can get the necessary mental health interventions they need along with drug treatment. As a result, the addict’s chances of a full recovery dramatically increase.

Life Skills Training

An important skill that is taught in our Ohio outpatient treatment center are the life and coping skills needed to function daily basis while still keeping recovery at the forefront. Clients will learn how to create a healthy daily schedule, money management, and budgeting and building effective interpersonal skills as well as receive employment coaching and other important life skills. The structure of our Ohio day treatment program allows for an environment where clients can actively practice and hone these skills at home once they leave treatment for the day.

Relapse Prevention

Relapse prevention is another important component of our Ohio outpatient rehab. Clients will learn to identify those triggers that can lead to relapse and learn to implement strategies to minimize their effects. Through a variety of workshops, lectures, and classes our clients also learn the importance of continued and active participation in 12-step or other similar sober support groups to help them minimize the chances of relapse in their recovery. Most importantly, you will learn that relapse isn’t a sudden event and that is a gradual psychological, emotional and physical progression that leads to relapse. Those who attend our Ohio outpatient rehab programs will learn to recognize the signs in each of these areas and be able to utilize techniques to address these issues before they grow worse.
