Will UnitedHealthcare Pay For Rehab?
Generally, yes, UnitedHealthcare will pay at least a portion of drug and alcohol rehab. Any out-of-pocket costs will depend on your individual policy. Most members can expect a deductible, copays, or co-insurance, depending on your plan.
Some members who have already satisfied their annual deductible may find that UnitedHealthcare will cover 100% of the costs of drug and alcohol rehab.
Which types of addiction services will be covered by your plan will also depend on the severity of your addiction and which substances you are using. There are several levels of care for addiction treatment, one of which is inpatient medical detox. Though your policy may cover medical detox when necessary, it may not be medically indicated for certain individuals and therefore could be denied. However, UnitedHealthcare may approve alternative levels of care.
Types of UnitedHealthcare Plans
UnitedHealthcare offers Employer & Individual plans (private insurance), Community plans (Medicaid/State Insurance), and Medicare plans. This guide covers employer and individual plans. To learn more about Community or Medicare plans, visit UnitedHealth Group or find facilities that accept your plan on SAMHSA. OARC is not contracted with Medicare at this time.
UnitedHealthcare has various types of Employer & Individual plans, including:
HMO Plans – UnitedHealthcare HMO plans have a defined network, which means you’ll need to choose a drug and alcohol rehab that is in-network with your plan. This defined network helps control costs and keeps premiums lower than other plans. Though these plans limit flexibility when choosing a provider, there are excellent addiction treatment options in Ohio that are in-network with UHC, including OARC.
PPO Plans – UnitedHealthcare PPO plans tend to give you more flexibility when choosing an addiction treatment center. You can choose an out-of-network rehab, but you’ll likely have higher upfront out-of-pocket costs. You also do not need referrals to see specialists.
EPO Plans – Like an HMO plan, EPO plans have a defined network or participants, however, you do not require referrals from your primary care physician to see specialists. UnitedHealthcare EPO generally offers more options than HMO networks but does not offer out-of-network coverage.
POS Plans – UnitedHealthcare POS plans are described as a combination of HMO and PPO plans. Like HMO plans, POS plans have a network of providers and often require referrals from your primary care doctor to see specialists. However, like PPO plans, POS plans also offer out-of-network coverage, but at the expense of higher copays.
UnitedHealthcare Choice – This plan provides access to a vast network of providers across the country, ensuring many options for in-network coverage. However, it does not offer any coverage for services from out-of-network providers.
UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus – This option encourages members to utilize the UnitedHealthcare network for potential cost savings, while still offering limited coverage for services from out-of-network providers.
Glossary of UnitedHealthcare Terms
You may hear or see various terms related to your UnitedHealthcare plan that can affect your coverage and costs for treatment. These inlcude:
Deductible: Your deductible is the amount you are responsible for before your plan starts to pay for covered services. Preventive care or certain doctor visits may be covered before your deductible is met. For addiction treatment, most plans require your deductible to be satisfied.
Out-of-pocket maximum/limit: The specified maximum amount you will have to pay in a plan year. If a combination of your deductible, copayments, and coinsurance meets your out-of-pocket maximum, UnitedHealthcare pays 100% of the cost of addiction treatment.
Copay – A flat fee you pay before insurance covers services
Coinsurance – Coinsurance means you will be responsible for a percentage of the rendered services. For example, your plan may cover 80% of addiction treatment services.
Referral – Certain specialty services may require a referral from your primary care physician (PCP). For addiction treatment, due to its often urgent nature, referrals usually are not required before you can be admitted to treatment.

UnitedHealthcare Outpatient Rehab Coverage
At OARC, we also offer a range of outpatient services that are covered by UnitedHealthcare. These services include:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): While PHP is considered an outpatient service, it closely mirrors our residential program in structure and intensity. The key difference lies in the fact that clients do not stay overnight at our facility. Rather, they participate in day-long group sessions. PHP demands a significant commitment, akin to a full-time job, focusing on comprehensive treatment.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): The IOP at OARC serves as a step down from residential treatment or PHP, providing a greater level of independence. Clients engage in group and individual therapy sessions during the evening, three times a week. This schedule is designed to support clients as they reintegrate into their daily lives, whether returning to school or work, while ensuring they have the necessary support and structure. Typically, clients transition to IOP after completing a residential treatment program.
- Addiction Counseling: Following IOP, clients have the option to continue working with their primary counselor at a tailored frequency. It’s a common practice for individuals to pursue counseling for the first year of their recovery journey, helping them to sustain their progress and manage challenges as they arise.
Mental Health & Dual Diagnosis Rehab Coverage
UnitedHealthcare also provides benefits for mental health treatment and psychiatry services. At OARC, we specialize in dual diagnosis treatment, addressing not only substance use disorders but also any concurrent mental health issues. It’s important to note that approximately 50% of individuals with a substance use disorder are also dealing with a co-occurring mental health condition. This statistic underscores our commitment to a comprehensive approach, treating any additional mental health concerns alongside substance abuse. We can leverage your UnitedHealthcare benefits for psychiatric services and medications for other mental health disorders, ensuring a holistic path to recovery.
