Do Other Countries Have a Drug Epidemic like America?

America: land of the free and home of the brave. Founded on Democracy, Rights, Liberty, Equality, and Opportunity- right? Yeah, the opportunity to throw your life away with a prescription bottle of death.

“Let us not forget who we are. Drug abuse is the repudiation of everything America is”, said our late great president of the United States Ronald Reagan. He saw it the then as we see it now- the drug epidemic that’s sweeping the nation and has been for decades. Addiction and Alcoholism have run rampantly in human beings more than likely since the beginning of time. Of course, things aren’t the way they used to be though. All the drugs that are produced today are getting bigger, faster, and stronger. Whether naturally out the earth or synthetically made, the substances on the market today are not the same as they were in previous generations. There is a drug epidemic creating a chemical genocide that can no longer be cold shouldered.

Mass Sedation

As mentioned before, our country specifically is always concentrating on concentrating things. Science and technology have picked up and increased the impact of deliverance from all the substances in our drug epidemic by tenfold. Crystal Meth fifty years ago is different than the meth, ice, tweak and other hybrids we see today. Marijuana is stronger with medical marijuana and state legalizations spreading. The crack cocaine laws with the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 were reduced by the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010. I mean, bath salts and Flakka didn’t even exist back in the day. In summary: the drug epidemic has become increasingly easier to be involved in.

Translation of the point here is that in a world where it seems everybody is constantly stressed or traumatized in one way or another, the numbers and casualties for addiction and alcoholism are growing rapidly. When illegal and legal over the counter medications are abused on a daily basis, it’s no wonder the drug epidemic has taken over. To many, it’s easier to put a mask on and hide from life than it is to confront your fears head on.

Financial Bloodlines

To be real, the United States is a first world country that bullies, lies, and manipulates its way into the hearts and fears of so many other countries. America stands up to the idea of chemical warfare and the terrorism that ensues from radical Islamists, North Korean military regime, and all the other self-deprecated countries we have on our never ending list of enemies. At the same time, the onslaught of chemicals and pharmaceuticals plaguing this great nation is justified and ignored.  This is due to the fact that money makes the world go round.  Our country and every aspect of the drug epidemic can be rationalized by the fiscal return or lack thereof.

On one hand, the United States is spending millions of dollars to eliminate the flow of drugs onto the streets. At the very same time, our country is doing business with the very same governments that are flooding the streets. Quite the tragic comedy. However, it doesn’t end with just the United States, as it takes two to tango in every situation. The sun sets on every country just a little differently.

Comparative Chemical Terrorism

It’s more than established that the U.S. has already been engaged in the ongoing drug epidemic battle, but what about the other countries are caused to suffer? Surely the U.S. isn’t the greatest of sinners. We’re all trying to find our own little sliver of paradise. The main difference with adjacent countries and the drug epidemic they’re facing is difference in tastes between chocolate and vanilla. Of course, all of this depends on what great nation we are speaking of.

At the top slaving away under the tyrant of addiction are:

  • The United States
  • Scotland
  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Afghanistan

Yet, it still doesn’t stop here. These are just the countries that without fail make it to the tops of certain addiction lists. Everything having to do with addiction and our worldly drug epidemic all depends on the geographical location. The Middle East for instance is at the top of the list of drug using countries for Opiates. Poppy seeds are often grown in the mountains of the Middle East and are easily overlooked and smuggled to many a destination. There are the alleged cocaine problems that cover a large portion of European and South American countries as it is often processed in that of the latter. Then of course unanimously around the world, Cannabis wins the “most valuable player” award.

Antidotes and Time Outs

Really the drug epidemic has no boundaries, more so it boils down to the different methods used to deal with it country by country. Countries like Iceland and the United States lead in death overdoses even though Afghanistan and Iran are neck to neck with the poppy induced fatalities accumulating. Yet still, the United States is pretty close to the top as far as incarceration being its number one method in slowly down the drug epidemic. However, the options for treatment are very high in the U.S. as well. Our country uses a very mixed method of fighting the constant drug abuse.

Then you can take a look at countries like New Zealand and Iran, both in extremely different geographical locations, but both topping the list for demand in addiction services and treatments. Unfortunately for many of the people in South America, a lot of the countries like Bolivia and Argentina considerably favor prison sentences for the crime output linked to the drug epidemic.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to perception. Alcoholic thinking fueled by an international drug epidemic won’t be disappearing overnight. Every country, every government, and every person is going to deal with it a little differently. Being aware of the drug epidemic and the dangers at hand, attached with globally increased treatment services is the only preventative measure that can be taken for any country. The drugs will not be disappearing anywhere on the horizon.
