Addiction Statistics and Parma, Ohio Substance Abuse Rehab Resources
Parma, Ohio is the seventh-largest city in the state with 79,167 residents as of the most recent 2017 census. It is located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States and is right on the southern edge of the well-known city of Cleveland. It is broken into four zip codes; 44129, 44130, and 44134. Parma is very much a blue-collar city where a vast majority of its residents are classified as middle class.
It’s a great place to raise a family and has all the amenities one could ask for from a city its size. In 2014, Neighborhood Scout rated Parma as the third safest city in the country with a population of 25,000 or more. Parma had a crime rating of 90 in 2014, which means it was safer than 90 percent of U.S. cities. This is very rare for cities that are very close to major metropolitan areas.
Despite the city’s phenomenal safety rating, there is one crime that seems to be more prevalent than almost anything else in Parma, drug possession. Over the past ten years, all of Ohio has been devastated by widespread opiate addiction. Nearly 5,000 Ohio residents lost their lives to a drug overdose in 2018, a vast majority of those people were killed by opiates, primarily fentanyl and heroin.
The Office of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said in a statement that during a recent five-day period from August 2 to August 6, 2017, seventeen people died of drug overdoses. Fentanyl was a suspect in at least 14 of that period’s 16 drug overdose deaths. This terrifying increase in deaths has been at the same pace as the record of 727 fatal overdoses in 2017 in the county. Experts were very worried that 2018 would be another record-setting year for Cuyahoga residents.
Fortunately, 2018 did not set an unprecedented level of heartache again for Cuyahoga County’s overdose deaths. According to the Medical Examiner’s Office of the county, after two straight years of growth, the number of people who died from drug overdoses finally declined, by a hopeful 23 percent in 2018. At the end of the tunnel, there is finally a light. In 2018, drug overdoses in Cuyahoga County resulted in 560 deaths. That’s the lowest number in the last three years, but that is still almost 11 deaths a week.
Detoxes in Parma, Ohio
Finding the right detox center can be a bit stressful, especially if you do not know what to look for; the same goes for treatment centers in Parma. It is important that the person seeking help gets exactly what they need when they make the life-changing decision to get help. It is imperative that someone who is struggling with heroin addiction enters a detox that offers medically assisted detox. The same goes for anyone who is physically dependent on alcohol, benzodiazepines, and other opioids. Without proper medication and supervision, the detox from these substances is not only extremely difficult and painful to overcome, but it can also be quite dangerous.
Medically assisted detoxes in Parma will help those in need safely and comfortably overcome their withdrawal symptoms. Some people may decide to detox themselves at home using the same or similar medications used in these detox programs, this is never suggested. Detox programs help separate the individual from outside stressors and triggers. When someone attempts an at-home detox they will still have to deal with all of this, which can easily lead to a relapse. As important as detox is, it is just s small step in the grand scheme of things. The next move that one should make is entering an inpatient drug rehab center.
Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabs
Detoxes do little to no work on the mental side of substance abuse, it is merely about getting the body through withdrawals. Inpatient and residential treatment centers in Ohio are designed to help people get to the root cause of their substance abuse and to help them learn valuable tools to prevent a relapse from occurring in the future. They do this through a variety of therapies and courses, what is offered at a rehab center will vary from facility to facility. Most inpatient rehabs in Parma are 30-60 days in length, but the actual time spent in a program will be determined by each individual’s specific needs and can also vary from rehab to rehab.
Upon completing inpatient treatment clients will typically have the opportunity to enter an outpatient program. Outpatient rehabs in Ohio will continue to work on the issues that were addressed while in the residential program. The big difference is that outpatient programs only have groups a few times a week for two to four hours each time. The client will not live under the care and supervision of the facility, instead, they will live at their own home or in a halfway house.

Meetings and Support Groups
Attending support groups is a vital part of the recovery process that must not be overlooked. Some people assume that since they went through rehab, they have done everything they need to do to leave the substances behind for good, sadly this is just not the case. Most people who enter rehab have been abusing drugs and/or alcohol for years, a mere 30-60 days is nowhere near enough to change a lifetime of bad decisions.
Meetings help add a routine to the weekly lives of those in recovery, plus it will also help hold them accountable. Having a set place to be at least once a week where the primary focus is recovery is very important. When someone attends meetings they will also meet others in recovery who are doing the right thing to better their lives. Some of these people maybe become close friends, but all of them will become part of their sober support group.
Chances are, you have heard of Alcoholics Anonymous and some of the groups that have formed off of it, such as Narcotics Anonymous. It is one of the oldest, established, and well-known recovery groups in the world; it even got its start right here in Ohio. With over two million members throughout the world, there is no shortage of AA meetings in Parma or anywhere else in the country. As widely recognized as AA is, it is not for everyone. Thankfully, there are other support groups out there who have been able to grow enough to be available to residents of Ohio.
