Lorian OH

Lorian, Ohio is located right on Lake Erie about 30 miles outside of Cleveland and is part of Lorain County. It is one of the most populated cities in OH with around 63,800 residents as of its most recent census, this makes it the largest city in Lorain County by population. Lorain used to be an industrial powerhouse, The Ford Motor Company, American Ship Building Company, and the United States Steel Corporation all used to call Lorain home.  Over the past 45 years the economy there has been deindustrialized which has caused it to face a variety of issues similar to other Rust Belt cities.

In the early 1970s to the mid-1980s Lorain saw a huge shift in its population and overall quality of life for city residents. Due to the rising unemployment rate that Lorain faced after deindustrialization, poverty rates grew. This lead to a decline in population lead to some urban decay, a rise in crime, and drugs become more prevalent throughout the city. Poverty rates in Lorain, OH are above the national average, but still remain below poverty rates of nearby Cleveland.

Back in the 1980s, the most prevalent drug issue facing Lorain was crack cocaine. The drug seemed to be everywhere and lead to a dramatic increase in crime. The crack epidemic of the 1980s is nowhere near as serious of an issue as the opiate epidemic that the city is currently facing. There were 232 fatal overdoses in Lorain County in 2016, which was the worst year on record. A vast majority of these deaths were linked to opiates, primarily the synthetic opioid fentanyl. It’s not just Lorain that’s facing issues with opiate addiction, it’s all of Ohio.

The Rise of Opioid Addiction

The Buckeye State has the second-highest rate of opiate-related deaths in the country, only behind neighboring West Virginia. In 2017 there were nearly 5,000 fatal opioid overdoses in Ohio, over 70% of those deaths were directly linked to opiates, primarily the powerful synthetic opioid, fentanyl. Fentanyl was never an issue in Lorain ten years ago, but recently it has become far more prevalent than almost any other mood and mind-altering substance. Drug dealers in Lorain and the rest of Ohio started combining fentanyl with heroin a few years ago, which resulted in a massive spike in overdose deaths.

Drug dealers were doing this to keep their out of pocket costs at a minimum while still selling a highly potent drug. People who purchased heroin at this time rarely knew that what they were actually getting was heroin cut with fentanyl or carfentanil. Fentanyl can be up to 100x more potent than pure heroin, while carfentanil can be 1,000x more powerful. People who used these drugs without knowing what they were putting into their bodies lead to widespread heartbreak throughout the Buckeye State.

Since the rise of fentanyl, Ohio has been in a battle fighting the opioid crisis and over the past year, it seems that the state is finally gaining some ground. Opiate related overdoses finally dropped in 2018, after several record-setting years in a row. This just a small victory and there is still a lot that must be done to help those who are currently struggling. Lorain, OH is trying its best to help prevent any more lives from being lost, but it is a work in progress.

Fighting Back and Saving Lives

Government officials have made naloxone, a life-saving drug that can reverse the effects of an opiate overdose, more easily obtainable by the public. Throughout Ohio, free courses are held to educate people about the warning signs of an overdose and how to administer naloxone properly. Many of these classes will allow people who attend to leave the group with a prescription for naloxone.

One thing that does need to change throughout Ohio is how easily accessible drug rehabs are to people. There are not enough drug rehab centers in Lorain and many people will often have to go onto a waiting list to enter a program. For most addicts and alcoholics this is a matter of life and death, and to be placed on a waiting list can be very dangerous. Lorian OH Inpatient Treatment, Detox, and Other Rehab Options

When someone who is struggling with substance abuse issues admits that they have a problem and asks for help, it is imperative that they receive that help as soon as possible. Every day that goes by that they continue to use one will only dig themselves deeper into the pit of addiction. Finding a rehab center in Lorain, Ohio with an available bed that also fits the needs of the individual can be a very stressful task. These stress levels will only rise if it is a last-minute effort to locate a treatment center in the area. This is why so many people do their research and line up a program ahead of time. By doing this there will be a great amount of stress relieved for the parties involved. It will also lower the amount of time between someone asking for help and receiving it.

When looking for an inpatient rehab center in Ohio there are few things that you should keep in mind. First of all, what level of care does that rehab center offer up? There are four main levels of care, detox, inpatient care, residential care, and outpatient care. Anyone who is physically hooked on drugs and/or alcohol will have to first enter a detox center to get their body back to normal. Once detox has been completed, then they will have to find out how to continue their care. Inpatient and residential care is the best option and has the highest level of care. Outpatient is designed as extended care, for those who have already completed inpatient, but it can also be used as the first line of defense when necessary.

Secondly, what are the accreditations of that facility? One of the highest qualifications a rehab center can have is the approval from the Joint Commission; think of it like the five-diamond award given to hotels. It means that the program has a high level of care and that the staff is properly licensed and educated. No one wants to enter a program that is run poorly, overcrowded, and where individual care is non-existent. Joint Commission accredited programs, such as Ohio Addiction Recovery Center, offer up the highest level of care and design treatment plans around each client’s specific needs.

The last thing to keep in mind is if the program you are searching for accepts insurance, and if they do not, what other options that program has for those without insurance. Privately owned programs typically accept private insurance, but some rehabs in Lorain may only work with a few major insurance companies, while others will work with a large variety. There are state-funded programs for those who do not have insurance and are not able to pay out of pocket for the treatment center. State-funded rehabs in Ohio typically have longer waiting lists and can be a bit more difficult to get approved for.
